EXTENDED NOTES AND ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
COLLABORATION IS THE ACTION OF WORKING WITH SOMEONE TO PRODUCE OR CREATE "SOMETHING"
oxford dictionary
As I like to say, if Collaboration were a mathematic equation, it might look like this:
1 + 1 + maybe 1 or 2 more = something WAY bigger than 1!
It seems pretty broad, doesn’t it? That’s because it IS.
Collaboration could be working with just one other person, two other people, seventy other people…
You could be creating something new, something you’ve done before in a new way, something you’ve all done a million times in your sleep.
Collaboration is a conglomerate of all your ideas, skills, excitement, and superpowers coming together to CO-CREATE. And when that happens, whatever you’re creating… gets MORE momentum.
It goes further, faster, wider, and grows bigger than what you would’ve created on your own.
Magic of Collaborations pep talk over. Now onto the Dark Side…
They’re not always easier. Sometimes it’s easier to do it alone, or more “perfect“. When we do it alone, there’s less fear of miscommunication and no need for compromise and relying on others.
That said, even with the challenges of business collaborations, I think they’re well worth forging with the right people.
Collaborations bring in diverse perspectives, viewpoints, new areas of expertise. You expand your network, increase your credibility, build on relationships, increase your skills, and learn a TON! Collaborations can take you places you’ve never gone before (and perhaps couldn’t imagine!).
Tangible Examples of Business Collaborations:
- Podcast hosting/guesting/cohosting
- Events
- Meetups, focus groups, and recurring activities
- Collaborating with someone in your industry (like I do with website designers)
- Speaking for organizations/groups
- Guest blogging, collaborative social posts, sharing about another business owner in your podcast, etc.
5 Reminders of Business Collaborations:
- The WHO you collaborate with and WHY you’re collaborating is often more important than the WHAT you’re creating.
- You don’t ALWAYS need to say yes to potential collaborations.
- Have your own business’ back, and then… take your defensive armor off.
- Be realistic in what you commit to and take on in a collaboration. Don’t promise what you can’t deliver on.
- You’re allowed to start small and test it out!
