How to Pitch a Podcast

4 TOP TAKEAWAYS FROM 52 PODCAST GUEST INTERVIEWS

As a writer, it probably comes as no surprise that I’m a word-lover. I have been since I was a little kid. I also have always loved things on “tape”.

In my younger years, I listened to stories on tape and specifically loved a show called Adventures in Odyssey. When I got a little older, I decided to make my OWN cassette tapes which, sorry mom, were sometimes just me rewriting over an existing one…

I would do interviews, sing, cooking shows, and tell my own written stories all on tape.

Fast forwarding a few more years, I did a research project in highschool where all my subjects were recorded while I interviewed them and I pieced together the recordings during my final presentation.

And it grew from there. I had the chance to do a few radio interviews, cohost on podcasts, guest on podcasts, and I was officially hooked.

I LOVE conversations and communication and this medium is one I’m drawn to.

Today, a podcaster of six years and a Copywriter, I help OTHERS expand their businesses through content marketing. Including podcasting and podcast guesting!

This past year (2024), I decided to make podcasting one of my MAIN focuses in my business and specifically, this year, podcast GUESTING.

I learned A LOT!

  • How to be a great podcast guest
  • How to pitch a podcast like a human
  • How to collaborate
  • What kind of time is involved in guesting
  • How to find podcasts to guest on
  • and more!

While I could probably give you 52 takeaways from the past year (one for every interview I had), I decided to distill it down into 4 KEY messages that you can use if you’re looking to pitch podcasts, be a podcast guest, or improve your hosting skills.

This episode will help you if you’re looking for more podcast guesting opportunities, want to be a better host, or are a business owner who wants to become a better collaborator in any capacity.

Inside the episode:

  • Why podcast guesting in the first place
  • Improving your pitch by focusing on a human-to-human connection
  • Filling content gaps with your unique approach to traditional topics
  • Conversational tips for personalizing your interview
  • How to gain confidence in your pitching and interviewing
  • The truth behind the time, energy, and possibility in being a podcast guest
  • And so much more!

Takeaway #1) It’s NOT just a numbers game.

When it comes to pitching podcasts and being a good guest, personalized connection is KEY. Being a guest on the right podcasts is essential, and having the right conversations for you depending on your goal is key.

More isn’t better. It’s just MORE.

It’s NOT just a numbers game. It’s not about guesting for guesting sake, or sending out as many generic pitches possible, hoping some land.

When pitching a podcast, put in time and effort to personalize your pitch.

Takeaway #2) Where you lack confidence, rely on your courage.

The podcast pitching and guesting process helped me overcome a lot of my fears in asking for what I want instead of just waiting for things to come to me. I used to just sit back and take whatever came to me in regards to speaking, podcast pitching, etc. If someone didn’t ask – I didn’t share!

This year, I started with leaning into my courage and then after awhile, my confidence caught up and I gained more and more of it. Start with courage even when you don’t have the confidence.

Takeaway #3) Podcast Guesting isn’t just another “meeting” in your calendar.

This is an important collaboration. Take it seriously. Show up prepared, on time, with what they asked you to come with. Be ready to have an amazing conversation and give serious VALUE to their unique listeners.

Takeaway #4) You never know where a single podcast interview will take you…

The opportunities are ENDLESS when you show up to get visible and collaborate as a podcast guest/host. Make a new friend, business partner, collaborator, spark ideas, the list goes on.

Podcasting and podcast guesting can change your life. I mean it! So, pitch like a human and pitch like you mean it.
